The Aubusson design takes its name from the town of Aubusson in central France, which has been a centre of tapestry and carpet production since the 17th century. The Aubusson style is characterised by soft, open floral compositions with a delicate, almost watercolour quality that distinguishes it from the denser Persian classical traditions. Pakistani weavers produce this vocabulary in pure wool on cotton at 256 knots per square inch.
The black all-over ground at 7 ft 11 in x 8 ft 4 in is bold and unusual. The near-square format is well suited to spaces where a standard rectangular carpet would feel too directional. The Aubusson floral composition against a black ground has an intensity that lighter grounds do not produce.
In your home: For formal sitting rooms and dining rooms. The all-black palette suits dramatic classic and contemporary interiors. The near-square format works particularly well under round dining tables.
