The Tree of Life is one of the oldest and most enduring motifs in carpet weaving. It appears across Persian, Caucasian and Central Asian traditions, each interpreting the form differently. In the Kashmiri silk tradition the design becomes delicate and intricate, with fine branching forms and an abundance of detail that the high knot density of silk on silk makes possible.
This small piece is woven in Kashmir at 576 knots per square inch in pure silk on a silk base. The multicolour palette is characteristic of Kashmiri production, which tends toward richer and more varied colour combinations than the more restrained Iranian tradition. At 2 ft 9 in x 4 ft 9 in this is a display piece rather than a floor covering in the conventional sense.
In your home: Works framed as a wall textile, on a console under glass or as a collector piece. Suits formal rooms, studies and spaces where the design can be appreciated at close range.
