Hereke is a small town on the Sea of Marmara in Turkey and home to one of the most prestigious carpet weaving traditions in the world. The Imperial Hereke workshops were established in the 19th century to produce carpets for the Ottoman court at extraordinarily high knot densities in pure silk on silk. This piece is knotted at 1800 knots per square inch, among the highest densities achievable by human hands.
The light gold ground with red border at 3 ft 3 in x 5 ft is luminous and refined. At 1800 knots per square inch the floral curvilinear design achieves a precision closer to goldwork embroidery than weaving. This is a serious collector piece, best appreciated at close range and in good natural light.
