The Sultanabad design takes its name from a city in western Iran, now known as Arak, which was one of the great commercial weaving centres of the 19th and early 20th centuries. The pattern is characterised by an open field with scattered floral sprays, a composition that reads as informal compared to the rigid symmetry of the Kashan or Isfahan traditions, but is no less demanding to execute well. Pakistani weavers have produced this design for decades, working in wool pile with silk highlights on a cotton base.
The red and rust field of this piece is warm and commanding.
