Qum produces some of the finest silk carpets in Iran. This small piece is knotted at 1100 knots per square inch in 100 percent silk on silk, a density that places the design resolution closer to engraving than to weaving.
The brown all-over ground at 4 ft 9 in x 3 ft 2 in is unusual in the Qum repertoire, which more commonly favours ivory, navy and red. Brown grounds create a warmth and depth that other colours do not produce. In pure silk the depth of a brown ground is something wool cannot replicate.
