The Bokhara design takes its name from the ancient Silk Road city of Bukhara in Central Asia, a trading hub through which carpets from the surrounding Turkmen tribes passed for centuries. The pattern most associated with the name is the gul, a repeated octagonal medallion that the Tekke and Yomut Turkmen wove as a tribal identifier. This piece is an antique Tekke Bokhara, 70 to 80 years old, made with Kurk wool and natural vegetable dyes.
Kurk wool is the fine undercoat taken from the neck and shoulders of the sheep, significantly softer and more lustrous than standard wool. Combined with natural dyes that have had decades to settle and mellow, the result is a depth of colour and a surface quality that new carpets cannot replicate regardless of price. The red field with repeating gul pattern and dark border is a composition that has been refined over centuries of production. It works because the geometry is precise and the proportions are correct.
In your home: A collector-grade piece suited to formal sitting rooms, studies and dining rooms. Works with both classic and contemporary interiors. The warm red palette pairs well with dark timber, navy walls and antique or mid-century furniture.
