Qum produces some of the finest silk carpets in Iran. The city works almost exclusively in pure silk at knot densities that place the craft closer to illustration than weaving. This piece is knotted at 784 knots per square inch and is signed by its maker Kareemi.
The multicolour palette shifts with the light in the way only silk can. The pile reads differently from different angles. The floral curvilinear design is drawn from the classical Persian vocabulary, executed at a precision wool cannot match at any price.
