The Sultanabad design takes its name from the commercial weaving workshops of western Iran, where open floral compositions with scattered botanical motifs were developed for the export market in the 19th century. This Indian piece reproduces the Sultanabad tradition in pure wool on cotton at 81 knots per square inch.
The burgundy and maroon ground at 6 ft 2 in x 9 ft is warm and commanding. The brown border provides an understated, harmonious frame. At this large format the carpet anchors a full sitting room or dining area. The scattered floral pattern has an organic, unhurried quality that the more formal Kashan or Isfahan traditions do not have.
In your home: Works in formal living rooms and dining rooms. The burgundy ground pairs with dark timber, cream walls and classic interiors.
