The Kashan design is among the most recognised in the classical Persian carpet tradition. Kashan in Isfahan Province produced some of the finest court carpets of the Safavid period, and the design vocabulary that emerged from those workshops has remained in continuous production for four centuries. The formal medallion, dense floral field and structured border are elements that have been refined over generations. Pakistani weavers produce this tradition in wool pile with silk highlights on cotton.
The burgundy and red ground of this piece is deep and commanding. At 7 ft x 10 ft 3 in it is a large format carpet well suited to a formal living room or dining space. The navy blue border provides strong definition. The silk highlights trace the arabesque and floral motifs, catching light differently from the surrounding wool.
In your home: Works in formal sitting rooms and dining rooms. The burgundy ground pairs with dark timber, navy walls and classic or colonial style interiors. Also works in contemporary rooms where one strong traditional piece is needed to anchor the space.
