The Tabriz design is one of the most technically demanding in the classical Persian carpet tradition. Tabriz was a major commercial weaving centre in northwestern Iran and the carpets produced there set standards for complexity and precision that continue to define the formal end of the market. Pakistani weavers reproduce this tradition in wool pile with silk highlights on cotton, at a scale that makes the design more accessible while retaining the character of the original.
The black ground is striking and unusual. Most classical carpet designs are produced on red, navy or ivory grounds. A black ground makes the floral and arabesque motifs appear to float, giving the design a drama and intensity that other colours do not achieve. At 10 ft x 14 ft 4 in this is a palace-scale piece suited to large formal rooms.
