The Mahal design takes its name from the commercial weaving workshops of Sultanabad in western Iran, which produced large-format carpets with bold floral compositions in the 19th century. The Mahal tradition produces pieces with an open, generous quality and a palette that tends toward warm, deep earthy tones. This Pakistani piece is woven in pure wool on cotton at 81 knots per square inch.
The deep purple-tinted brown ground with camel and gold border at 8 ft 10 in x 12 ft 2 in is unusual and richly warm. The deep earthy palette is grounding and complex. At this extra large format the piece defines a large formal room. The camel and gold border provides warm definition against the dark field.
In your home: For large formal sitting rooms, dining rooms and reception spaces. The deep earthy palette suits classic, colonial and considered contemporary interiors.
