The Kashan design from Kashmir combines one of the great classical Persian compositions with the Kashmiri weaving tradition. Kashmiri weavers have produced silk on silk carpets since the 16th century, adapting Persian design vocabulary to their own materials and methods. The result is a distinct tradition that shares the grammar of the Persian carpet but has its own character and palette.
This large piece is knotted at 576 knots per square inch in pure silk on a silk base. The red ground with the formal Kashan medallion and border composition is a pairing that has remained in continuous production for over three centuries because it works. This piece is sold but similar pieces are available.
