Carpet Cleaning & Repair Singapore
Handmade Carpet Gallery has been caring for handmade carpets in Singapore for five generations. Alongside our collection of hand-knotted rugs, we offer professional cleaning, repair and restoration for carpets of all origins, whether purchased from us or elsewhere. Every piece is assessed individually before any work begins. We do not apply a one-size approach to carpets that require individual attention.
Our cleaning process
We follow a seven-step process for every carpet we clean. We do not use industrial methods designed for synthetic broadloom.
Step 1: Full inspection
Every carpet is examined before work begins. We assess condition, age, fibre type, dye stability and any existing damage. This determines the method used throughout the clean and flags anything that needs specialist attention before water is applied.
Step 2: Colour fastness test
Dyes are tested before any cleaning agent is applied. If a dye is not stable, we adjust the method to prevent bleeding or loss. This step is particularly important for antique pieces and carpets with natural dyes, which can behave differently from modern synthetic dyes.
Step 3: Dry dust removal
Surface dust and particulate matter are removed before the wet clean begins. Skipping this step causes abrasion during washing that can damage pile fibres. For heavily soiled pieces, this stage alone can take considerable time.
Step 4: Main wash
The carpet is washed using the method determined at inspection. Wool and silk pieces receive specialist treatment appropriate to their construction and dye type. We do not use alkaline detergents, bleach-based products or commercial carpet sprays. All cleaning agents used are appropriate for natural fibres and natural dyes.
Step 5: Specialist treatment where needed
Odour, urine, mould or insect contamination is treated with appropriate specialist agents before or alongside the main wash. Stained areas are addressed individually. We will advise at inspection if specialist treatment is needed and what it involves before proceeding.
Step 6: Controlled drying
Carpets are dried in open-air conditions with controlled light exposure. Drying is monitored throughout to prevent mildew and ensure even moisture distribution. Rushing the drying process is one of the most common causes of post-clean problems. We do not use heated drying chambers for wool or silk pieces.
Step 7: Final inspection and collection
The carpet is inspected again before it is returned. We check that dyes, fibres and structure are intact and that the result meets our standard. We will contact you when the piece is ready for collection or to arrange return delivery.
Repair and restoration
Hand-knotted carpets can be repaired in ways that machine-made carpets cannot. Because the construction is knotted rather than tufted or woven on a power loom, damaged areas can be re-knotted by hand, fringe can be restored, edges can be re-bound, and holes can be filled in a way that is virtually invisible to the eye when done properly. All carpets must be cleaned before restoration begins.
Common issues we address include:
- Fringe damage and loss, re-knotted or replaced to match the original construction
- Edge and selvedge unravelling, re-bound or re-woven to stop further structural loss
- Holes and tears, re-knotted with matched fibre and dye, including moth damage and worn-through areas
- Water damage and dye bleeding from improper previous cleaning
- Pile thinning and wear in high-traffic areas
For pieces requiring extensive restoration, we work with specialist weavers who can source and match fibre type and colour for a seamless result. Restoration of antique and collectible pieces is handled with particular care. If you have a piece with sentimental or monetary significance that has been damaged, we will assess it and discuss what is possible before any work begins.
Valuation and consultation
If you have inherited a carpet, are considering a purchase, or want to understand what a piece in your possession is worth, we offer informal assessments at our showroom. Five generations of experience in the Singapore carpet trade means we can offer context that a general valuer or auction house may not.
