The Ardibil design takes its name from the great Ardabil carpet of the 16th century, now in the Victoria and Albert Museum. Kashmiri weavers have produced silk on silk interpretations of this iconic composition for generations, working at knot densities that rival the finest Iranian production. This large piece is knotted at 576 knots per square inch in pure silk on a silk base.
The burgundy and red ground at 9 ft x 12 ft 3 in is rich and commanding. At this scale and knot density the piece is a significant collector acquisition. The formal Ardibil composition in deep red tones is one of the most historically resonant colour combinations in the carpet world. The silk pile shifts with the direction of light in a way wool cannot replicate.
