The Bokhara design takes its name from the city of Bukhara and is produced widely across Afghanistan. The repeating gul motif that defines the Bokhara tradition has been woven by Turkmen tribes across Central Asia for centuries. This small piece is woven in wool and silk on a wool base at 196 knots per square inch, giving the gul pattern excellent definition.
The brown and camel ground at 3 ft 10 in x 5 ft 5 in is warm and unusual. The camel and brown palette is a softer, more understated take on the standard red Bokhara. The silk highlights add a subtle luminosity to the gul forms. At this small format the piece works as a bedside rug or accent piece.
