Qum produces some of the finest silk carpets in Iran. This medium piece is knotted at 1100 knots per square inch in 100 percent silk on silk and is signed by its maker Tahir Mohammadi, a mark of individual authorship that is rare in carpet production anywhere in the world.
The red ground at 4 ft 2 in x 6 ft 8 in shifts with the light in the way only silk can. At 1100 knots per square inch the floral curvilinear design achieves a resolution closer to illustration than weaving. The all-red ground gives the design a depth and richness that lighter grounds cannot match.
