Qum produces Iran's finest silk carpets, and has done so since the early 20th century. The city works almost exclusively in pure silk, at knot densities that are genuinely difficult to comprehend. This piece is knotted at 1,800 knots per square inch. A fine wool carpet sits between 100 and 400. At 1,800, the detail achievable is closer to illustration than weaving.
The Palace Garden design in deep navy is one of the most recognised compositions in the Qum tradition. The piece is signed by its maker, Bahraam, which is uncommon. Most carpet weavers work anonymously. A signature indicates a craftsman who regards the work as his own. Pure silk carpets change with the light in a way wool does not. The pile reads differently from different angles, luminous from one side, deep and saturated from another. In a well lit room, the effect is quiet but unmistakable.
In your home: Best in a formal sitting room or study where foot traffic is light. Works well under a glass or open framed coffee table. Suits deep toned walls and both classic and contemporary interiors equally.
