Handmade Carpet Gallery has been caring for handmade carpets in Singapore for five generations. Alongside our collection of hand-knotted rugs, we offer professional cleaning and repair services for carpets of all origins, whether purchased from us or elsewhere.

If you have a piece that needs attention, our team can assess it and advise on the appropriate course of action. We work with wool, silk and wool-on-cotton pieces and understand the specific requirements of hand-knotted construction. We do not use industrial cleaning methods designed for synthetic broadloom.

Carpet cleaning

Handmade carpets accumulate dust, oils and atmospheric deposits within the pile over time that routine vacuuming does not fully remove. A proper wash restores the depth and clarity of the colours, removes odours, and extends the life of the piece considerably.

Our cleaning process is suited to hand-knotted wool and silk carpets. We assess each piece individually before treatment. Dye stability, pile condition, foundation integrity and any existing damage are all checked before work begins. We do not apply one-size approaches to carpets that require individual attention.

We recommend a professional clean every three to five years for carpets in regular use, and more frequently for pieces in households with children, pets or heavy foot traffic.

Carpet repair and restoration

Handmade carpets can be repaired in ways that machine-made carpets cannot. Because the construction is knotted rather than tufted or woven on a power loom, damaged areas can be re-knotted, fringe can be restored, edges can be re-bound, and holes can be filled in a way that is virtually invisible to the eye.

Common issues we address include fringe damage and loss, edge and selvedge unravelling, moth damage, pile wear and thinning, tears and holes, water damage, and dye bleeding from improper cleaning.

Restoration of antique and collectible pieces requires particular care. We treat older carpets with the attention their age and value warrant. If you have a piece with sentimental or monetary significance that has been damaged, we are happy to assess it and discuss what is possible before any work begins.

Rug valuation and consultation

If you have inherited a carpet, are considering a purchase, or simply want to understand what a piece in your possession is worth, we offer informal assessments at our showroom. Five generations of experience in the Singapore carpet trade means we can offer context that a general valuer or auction house may not.
